Before founding Better Call MERV, "MERV" built a rewarding and unconventional career path that prepared him perfectly for the work he does today. He is a licensed State of Florida Private Investigator (A9900347, A.C.E. Inc.) with a specialty in environmental abuse, identifying negative indoor sources, cause of pollutants, identifying particulants and more. MERV has an exceptional ability to detect hidden problems, analyze environments, and uncover issues others often miss.  

During the last twenty years, MERV has invested heavily in training, education, and hands-on field experience to become a recognized expert for home air analysis and air quality improvement services. MERV's unique skill set allows him to identify contaminants, circulation issues, pollen sources, filtration gaps, and the daily problems that contribute to unhealthy indoor air.

The truth is simple: it started with love.

MERV shared an exceptionally close bond with his MOTHER but lived in New York. As the years passed and life changed, MERV moved to Florida and found himself by her side again—this time as her anchor. At age 85, widowed for the second time and living alone in her 2,000-square-foot Boca Raton home, she needed support. And as any devoted son would, MERV stepped in.

But he began to notice something troubling.

Her energy faded. Her once-steady routines became difficult. And a persistent, worsening cough followed her everywhere. Allergists and Pulmonologists told her it was “normal for her age”—a natural decline, limited lung capacity, nothing more.

But MERV didn’t buy it entirely.

Something inside him—instinct, intuition, loyalty—told him there was a deeper problem.  So MERV did what any steadfast and devoted son would do—he began investigating. And for MERV, investigation was second nature. Long before indoor air quality investigations and consulting became his calling, he had built a respected career as a Florida Statewide Licensed Private Investigator, Owner and C.E.O. Officially and currently licensed as Jonathan M. Levy (A9900347, A.C.E., Inc.). Since 1997, MERV relied on those same instincts, skills, and meticulous attention to detail to uncover what was silently harming his mother inside her own home. 

And what MERV found changed his and his Mother's life.

Behind her walls and vents, Merv uncovered the truth:

His MOTHER had been breathing polluted indoor air for many years!

He discovered his MOTHER did not take care of the essentials for beathing clean air and found a clogged main air filter—wrong size, wrong MERV rating. Two additional bedroom intake filters were also clogged. Dust, debris, leakage and pollutants silently filling the air she relied on every day. It was shocking. It was heartbreaking. But it was also the moment everything became clear to MERV.

From that day forward, MERV made it his mission to transform his mother’s home into a sanctuary of clean, healthy air. Every month at minimum and sometimes weekly, he replaced her filters—with the correct ones. He switched her house cleaner into using HEPA-filtered vacuuming. He sealed air leaks and gaps throughout the home. He even engineered his own custom ceiling fan filter, reducing airborne pollutants by nearly 95%—a unique solution created out of pure necessity and love.

And the results?

They were nothing short of life-changing.

From age 91 to 101, MERV’s mom lived in an optimized clean-air environment. During that decade, MERV didn’t just help her—he immersed himself in the science and practice of air quality:

Today, MERV treats every client like family—because that’s how this all began. Many of the people he helped years ago still call him for service. 

After more than 18 years of hands-on work, study, real-world testing, and helping countless families, MERV formalized his mission by creating a professional clean-air consulting practice. And he does it with the same heart, compassion, and commitment that guided him from the very beginning.
